An America's Cup Primer . . .

The America’s Cup is coming to San Francisco in August for the start of the 2012-2013 Series.  Here are ten things you should know about the America’s Cup:

  1. USA’s ORACLE team is awesome.  We are the defending champions.  We also have two boats whereas other countries only have one.
  2. Our skipper isn’t American – he’s a Kiwi.  But, he’s the youngest skipper to ever win the Cup.  You can stalk him here: www.facebook.com/JamesSpithill
  3. Our other helmsman is the greatest Cup skipper of all time.  Winning 4 America’s Cups. He’s also the CEO.  He doesn’t have a website yet (sorta makes him even cooler) so you can read more about him here: www.oracleracing.com
  4. The boats they sail are crazy fast.  The AC45 is a catamaran capable of going 20knots.  The wing is about 60 feet tall.  Soon, they’ll be sailing the AC72, which will go even faster.
  5. They sail with a crew of 5 people:
    1. A Skipper or Helsman that is basically in charge of everything and usually drives. (James Spithill, Russell Coutts)
    2. A Tactitian who gives strategy and tactics input (Tom Slingsby, Joe Kostecki)
    3. Two Trimmers who fix the sail shape for the wind and direction (Joe Newton, Murray Jones)
    4. A Bowman who stays up in the front of the boat and does various jobs (Brad Webb, Simeon Tienpont)*Athletes in parentheses are just some of the people on our team.
  6. The last time the America’s Cup was held in America was 1995.
  7. The America’s Cup started in 1851 when an American boat from New York beat 15 British boats from the Royal Yacht Squadron.
  8. The race course (for those of you from San Francisco) will start by Chrissy Field, and then up and back a few times finishing near Pier 27/28.
  9.  They do a lot of good too; the Healthy Ocean Project connects America’s Cup teams with nonprofits dedicated to preserving and learning about our oceans.  Learn more here: http://www.americascup.com/en/More-Than-A-Sport/AC-Healthy-Ocean-Project/
